Addiction Recovery statistics – what you need to know

People are in dire need of finding solutions that suit their specific needs when it comes today a mental and emotional health. The Drug Rehab centre craze became a massive moneymaking scheme in the early 80s when medical aids were throwing millions at ex addicts who had been through a drug rehab centre program themselves. They didn’t know what else to do with the escalating problem of drug and alcohol addiction. Since the 80s of course the problem has spiked. Statistics in South Africa say around 12% of the population are in need of some treatment for addiction. That number is slightly higher than most other countries by a few percentage points.

Of the 20.3 million people with SUDs, 37.9% also had mental illnesses. Of the 42.1 million people with mental illness, 18.2% had SUDs.

Although lower rung rehabs cost around 10-20k per month, luxury rehab centres cost anyway upwards of 30k to R250,000 a month the statistics for success are dismally low. The general consensus is that after a 28 day program followed by some sort of after-care allows people to expect a 5 to 20% success rate. In South Africa one of our ministers has suggested the rate of success is as low as 3%. He may be right.

Alternatives to Rehab

This reminds me of a story that Anthony Kiedis of the Red Hot Chili Peppers one’s told about his stay in a California Drug Rehabs centre. He said that way back in the day he had together $10,000 to do his 28 day program. A lot of money at the time. He was pretty desperate and in dire need of any help that he could possibly get his hands on. On the first day of treatment the addiction counsellor looked around the room filled with 30 addicts in for treatment. The experienced addiction counsellor looked around the room and said that the statistics say that only one of you will actually find recovery from this group. It was at that point that Keeper said that he knew that he had to give it all he had to take that one spot and discover a lot of sobriety.

The Good news and good statistics

According to research from the CDC, 3 out of 4 people (75%) recover from addiction. We believe the figure may be slightly higher. That is pretty good news when it comes to recovery from anything, particularly addiction issues.

What does tells me is that it is a process that is not that easy to start with. Eventually people seem to get there. One of the biggest problems with starting recovery from addiction process is the defence mechanism of denial. It is such a massive hurdle to overcome for most people that they can spend years trying to allow the truth to set them free. The very first step of the famous 12 step program of Alcoholics Anonymous starts with two words. We admitted! There is no bigger hurdle in my experience as an addiction recovery specialist. The denial and enabling of families is a close second although the subject remains the same. Only when we get honest with ourselves does the process of recovery begin.

Alternatives to drug rehab

As far as the boom in Alternatives to Rehab goes. There are hundreds of new ways to find sobriety and healing for any kind of addiction, obsession or compulsion. here are many ways to skin a cat and Drug Rehabs centres or addiction clinics are not the only way for people to try and turn their lives around. Despite popular opinion many people have help themselves through the process of recovery. The ways they have done this include CBT or cognitive behavioural therapy and swapping the bad in their lives for good. Most people need some help and guidance with this and eventually most people are led to some sort of professional or expert in the area of addiction recovery before they make solid gains for themselves.

Others have tried meditation or have gone on some sort of healing retreat and have reported good results as alternatives to Rehab. But we must not underestimate that the statistics associated with treating yourself are far more dismal than the ones we have cited above. Asking for help is an intra girl part of any recovery process. Most people will never seek out any kind of addiction treatment help – ever! It is just not in their toolkit.

What we also find that make recovery statistics even harder is that many rehabs today and they are also many of them are filled with people who have psychological emotional or spiritual problems that have led them to seek out some sort of care for themselves through either substances gambling or other process addictions. Many people who end up in Drug Rehabs senses today I actually there because they are looking for help with trauma that they have experienced in the past. Some are trying to get through grief and others are trying to find better ways to cope with the pressures of life. This is why the growing need for alternatives to Rehab is so huge today.

In our many years of treating people for everything from burnout to depression and meaninglessness we have discovered that the answer for most people it’s always the same. They need to change everything. They need to change the way they think feel and act and how they perceive themselves others and the world to be. This is what we call the journey of healing and life transformation. No labels are required and no diagnosis are necessary. If life is not working for you change it and change it on your own terms. Work on changing everything and then nothing will be missed.

Relook at your personality, every thought, feeling and action that you have and then develop conscious awareness around those patterns. It won’t be long before you discover what is not working and what needs to change. This is the spiritual solution, a solution that is derived from looking inwards for solutions rather than outwards.
